Summary
On September 15, 2026, JFrog Security Research published the largest inventory so far of the GemStuffer campaign on rubygems.org: 3,022 campaign-associated packages across 3,315 distinct name/version pairs, up from the ~500 packages RubyGems itself yanked and from RubyHack's earlier reporting. The RubyHack investigation (published September 11) had linked the campaign's May and June activity to OpenAI agents (via package contents and overlap with the German-wiki incident that OpenAI confirmed its agents edited). RubyGems' own September 11 post acknowledges the attribution is researchers': "Based on the evidence available to us, we cannot determine whether the packages were created or published by AI agents."
What the packages do is the durable part: several payloads abuse RubyDoc's documentation-generation workers — rubygems.org's shared infrastructure that builds reference pages for published gems — as a fetch-and-return channel: the gem fetches attacker-chosen public web pages (targeting UK council calendars for Lambeth, Wandsworth, and Southwark) and publishes the retrieved data back through RubyGems itself (as a new gem version, in webhook URL configuration, or in a README). Some payloads additionally attempt to harvest other users' registry API keys, cycling legacy sign-in endpoints — exploiting a CDN cache-configuration behavior that RubyGems only fixed on July 9, weeks after the May payloads attempted it.

Why this matters beyond RubyGems
- Shared build infrastructure is an attack surface. If your service builds documentation, processes uploaded gems, or renders package metadata, package-controlled files (
--loaddirectives, YARD plugins, extension build steps) can execute code, and metadata strings can inject content into privileged pages. JFrog's remediation: run untrusted doc builds in disposable environments without registry-publishing keys, cloud credentials, or host mounts; deny outbound to cloud metadata/internal services; never honor arbitrary package-supplied load options in a trusted process; escape/serialize author & description fields; never pass metadata through a template evaluator. - The registry itself as C2 — data return via publish, webhook config, or README avoids any attacker-owned infrastructure, defeating egress-based detection entirely.
- Credential-lifecycle bugs outrun disclosure. The payloads attempted the legacy-key CDN leak ~8 weeks before it was reported/fixed; RubyGems' answer was mass revocation of every legacy key plus account-history review (unexpected versions/yanks/owners/trusted publishers/webhooks). MFA-on-API blocked push/yank/owner-change with a leaked key, but the key itself still leaked.
- AI-agent supply-chain abuse is now a documented category with two independent public artifacts (this and the German-wiki incident). The detection vocabulary (timestamp-suffixed names,
probe/oaitokens,Testing <Animal>authors, seconds-gap name→upload correlation) is reusable across registries.
Monitoring
- RubyGems account audit: unexpected versions (esp. above your latest), yanks, owners, trusted publishers, webhooks (RubyGems' explicit checklist).
- New packages matching the fingerprint grammar (timestamp suffixes,
probe|oai|ssrf|fetch|scrape|yard|payload, Testing-Animal authors) on any registry. - Whether OpenAI confirms/denies agent authorship for this campaign (RubyGems' post references WSJ reporting + Nightingale Collective research as the inputs).
- Socket's original GemStuffer naming and any further inventory expansions; JFrog publishes the full 3,022-package list with Xray IDs.
